Carlos Machado, born November 9, 1963, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a legendary figure in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and one of its pioneering instructors in the United States. As the eldest of the Machado brothers, he helped establish BJJ's presence in America during the early 1990s.Early Machado began his journey at the famous Gracie academy under his uncle, Grandmaster Carlos Gracie. He later trained under Rolls Gracie in Copacabana until Rolls' passing. Eventually, he earned his black belt from Carlos Gracie Junior.

In 1990, Machado moved to the United States, initially settling in California where he met Chuck Norris, who became one of his most notable students.
