Born on June 26, 1982, in La Spezia, Italy, during his father's service with the Ecuadorian Navy, Juan Pablo was raised in Ecuador and spent two years in Colombia. Juan Pablo played a crucial role in developing BJJ in Ecuador, organizing the first local competitions and bringing black belt instructors to the country.
In 2008, Juan Pablo joined the Gracie Barra team and moved to the USA permanently, earning his purple, brown, and black belts under the Gracie Barra Association, with his first-degree black belt awarded by Carlos Gracie Jr. in 2011. Despite early struggles, including sleeping in the gym and his car, he persevered to establish successful schools in California and abroad.
Juan Pablo is known for his exceptional coaching abilities, having helped establish Gracie Barra schools in Burbank, Woodland Hills, Hollywood, and Chile. In 2014, he opened EDJ School Jiu-Jitsu in Corona, CA, and continues to teach there while supporting affiliations in Germany, Chile, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Colombia, and the USA.
