Greg Souders
Greg Souders is a distinguished jiu-jitsu black belt under David Jacobs, known for his innovative approach to grappling based on the Ecological Dynamics branch of psychology. As the founder of Standard Jiu-Jitsu, one of the top no-gi jiu-jitsu and submission wrestling gyms in the sport, Souders has made significant contributions to the development of highly successful athletes such as Deandre Corbe, Gavin Corbe, and Alex Nguyen.
Born on April 26, 1984, in Washington, DC, and raised in Maryland, Souders first engaged in competitive sports through chess during his high school years, reaching a commendable rating of 1705. His interest in mixed martial arts (MMA) was piqued in his late teens by watching Pride FC and the UFC, leading him to discover Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) after watching the iconic Gracies In Action documentary.
Souders began his BJJ journey at the age of 20 under coach Mike Moses, later training extensively with Lloyd Irvin, who promoted him from white to brown belt. However, a severe neck injury as a purple belt halted his competitive aspirations. Undeterred, Souders turned his focus to coaching, dedicating himself to helping others achieve their goals in jiu-jitsu.
In 2013, following controversy at Team Lloyd Irvin, Souders joined David Jacobs' affiliation, receiving his black belt in 2015. At Standard Jiu-Jitsu, Souders implemented a unique training methodology based on Ecological Dynamics, a scientific approach he discovered while researching coaching techniques. Influenced by a volleyball instructor's use of game-based drills, Souders adapted this innovative style to jiu-jitsu, focusing on creating a dynamic and effective learning environment.
Under Souders' guidance, Standard Jiu-Jitsu has produced medalists at every level of competition, from NAGA to IBJJF Pan-American and World championships. Despite his own competitive career being cut short, Souders' passion for the sport and commitment to his students have made him a respected coach and mentor in the jiu-jitsu community. His dedication to the art continues to inspire and elevate athletes, contributing to the ongoing evolution of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
